The P-38 Lightning was the first fighter to provide escort cover all the way to targets in Germany. Very maneuverable, it could hold its own against single engined Luftwaffe fighters in the hands of a skilled pilot. The P-38 was also a very effective ground attack plane.

Dawn Chorus shows P-38 Lightnings of the 20th Fighter Group climbing out from their base in Kingscliff Northamptonshire. The fighters in D-Day markings are outbound to Normandy for a ground attack mission supporting the invasion. The print is signed by Hub Zemke, Robin Olds, Jack Ilfrey and Arthur Jeffrey.
