Focke Wulf Fw190's of JG2 escort U-boats returning to their base and U-boat bunker in Brest France. Brest gave easy access to the Atlantic convoy routes and heavy merchant shipping in the Atlantic.

Due to the damage initially caused by U-boats to merchant shipping in the Atlantic, Brest was under constant attack by RAF and USAAF bombers. The area of Northwest France became one of the most heavily defended area by the Luftwaffe including JG2 based at Morlaix 40 miles from Breast.
