The 18th of August 1940, during the Battle of Britain which became known as "The Hardest Day" Depicts 54 Squadron based at Hornchurch, an RAF forward airfield preparing to take off. In the lead is the Spitfire of Squadron leader James Leathart with New Zealand Ace Colin Grey being positioned to follow.

This was the height of the Battle of Britain; the previous week had been grueling. On August 6th the Luftwaffe changed tactics, prioritizing attacking RAF Fighter Command airfields (Adlertag). This put severe pressure on the RAF which culminated in the Hardest Day August 18th, 1940.

The print is signed by nine RAF fighter pilots who flew during the Battle of Britain including, Billy Drake, Tom Neil, Nigel Rose and Tony Iveson.
