The Battle of the Coral Seas halted the Japanese campaigned through the southwest Pacific, stopping the capture of Port Moresby. This became the first major naval engagement where neither side saw each other, the action coming entirely from carrier based aircraft.

The loss of the Lexington was a big blow but the sinking of the Shoho and damage to the Japanese carriers Shokaku and Zuikaku was significant to the Battle of Midway. Lexington dive bombers are shown over a burning Shoho which was hit by aircraft from Lexington and Yorktown and sunk.
