Homeward Bound illustrates Dave Shannon's Lancaster AJ-L flying very low over the Dutch coast returning from Operation Chastise. 617 Squadron led by Guy Gibson had attacked the Ruhr dams, with the revolutionary Barnes Wallis 10,000 lb hydrostatic bomb.

The audacious raid was a success, but the cost was high. Of the nineteen Lancaster evolved in the raid, eight were lost with only two survivors from all their crews.
