Channel Sweep illustrates an offensive patrol over the English Channel by a section of Spitfire Mk. Vb from 452 squadron, led by Brendan "Paddy" Finucane. In 1941 as it built strength and experience RAF Fighter Command increasingly took the battle to the Luftwaffe with frequent patrols known as "Circuses" over the Channel and into Northern France. 

In July 1942, Paddy Finucane was hit by ground fire over France he attempted to make in back to England but vanished in the English Channel. At that time, he had scored an incredible 28 victories.
