The elite 56th fighter group flew P-47 Thunderbolts through the War. Commanded by legendary leaders Hub Zemke, Bob Landry and David Shilling the 56th destroyed more Luftwaffe aircraft in combat than any other fighter group in the 8th Air Force. The 56th also created more aces than any other group including Gabby Gabreski, Bob Johnson and Walter 'Bud' Mahurin.

The print portrays P-47's of the 56th tasked with escorting B-24's bombing Bremen. The Luftwaffe was waiting in force, during the massive dog fight that followed the 56th had 23 confirmed kills.

The matted companion print 'A Pack of Wolves' is signed by a further six P-47 pilots Robert 'Shorty' Rankin, Russell Kyler, John Bradshaw, Billy Gene Edens, Gordon Batdorf and Robert Winters. In the matting of the companion print are the signatures of three famous P-47 Aces:

• Robert S. Johnson - 27 victories in WWII
• 'Hub' Zemke - 18 victories
