Battle for the Islands depicts VMF 121 one of the Marine Corps most feared units fought to the end of the war in the Pacific. The unit amassed more than 209 enemy aircraft destroyed with 15 of the units' pilots becoming Aces.

The print shows Corsairs of VMF 121 providing air support for the invasion force landing at Rendova. The landing was heavily attacked by Zero's and Mitsubishi "Betty" bombers from Rabaul. During the day a staggering 58 Japanese planes were destroyed including 19 by VMF 121.

The print is signed by Jim Sweet, Bruce Porter and Bob Baker who flew with VMF 221 and VMF 121.
